  • The study compound is a new compound. It may potentially be used for the treatment of health problems related to (severe) overweight. The study compound is a medicine that is similar to a hormone called amylin. This hormone is produced by the body itself and is released after a meal. Amylin makes you feel full, less hungry and helps your body lower the amount of sugar in the blood.
  • This is the first study in which the study compound is being administered in humans; in other parts of this study the study compound is already been administered to 70 humans.
  • You will receive the study compound for 26 weeks. You will receive the study compound in the research center, but also take it at home. During the study, you will be required to keep a diary of the medication you take at home.

All (potential) medicines can cause side effects. Since this is the first study in which the investigational drug is being tested in humans, no side effects have yet been observed in humans. It is also unknown whether and how often these side effects may occur. In rare cases (<0.1%), serious side effects can occur during the first administration to humans. The compound has already been extensively tested in the laboratory and on animals. Prior to the medical screening, you will receive written information about the trial, which also describes the possible side effects based on these animal tests. This information will also be discussed with you at the start of the medical screening. You can then ask the screening physician or nurse any question you may have. The medical screening will only take place after you have given written consent to participate in the trial. We want to emphasize that even after giving written consent, participation in any clinical trial is voluntary. You can decide at any time not to participate or to stop the medical screening or the trial. You do not need to provide a reason for why you no longer wish to participate.

At the start of the screening visit, you are only allowed to have consumed water for 4 hours. This means that, before any potential participation in the study, we will already ask you not to eat for a certain period of time. You have not yet signed the form for participation in the trial. After the screening it will be announced whether you can participate.

Who can participate?

Target group

  • You are a healthy male or female.
  • You are at least 18 and at most 64 years old.
  • Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is at least 27.0 and at most 39.9 kg/m2. 
  • Both non-smokers and very light smokers or occasional smokers are allowed to participate in this clinical trial (maximum of 1 cigarette per day). During your stay in our research facility, you are not allowed to smoke.
  • As a female you can only participate if you are not pregnant, not breastfeeding and meet one of the following conditions:
    • You use hormonal contraception (for example the contraceptive pill or intra-uterine device containing hormones) in combination with a condom;
    • You use a copper intra-uterine device in combination with a condom;
    • You have passed the menopause (no periods for at least 12 months);
    • You have been sterilized or your male partner has been sterilized;
    • You are only sexually active with a partner of the same sex;
    • You are not sexually active according to your lifestyle.
  • As a male you can only participate if you meet one of the following conditions:
    • You or your female partner do not need to use any form of contraception;
    • You and your male partner do not necessarily need to use a condom because of the study.

Note:

  • You cannot participate in the trial if you have participated in another clinical trial in the 30 days prior to the first compound administration in this clinical trial (counting from the last dosing in the previous trial).
  • To determine if you are suitable to participate in this trial, you will undergo a medical screening. Depending on availability, this can be performed in Groningen or in Utrecht.

What is the compensation for this research?

Compensation

You will receive a gross compensation of € 20.158 for full participation in the study.

Travel expenses will be reimbursed based on the distance traveled (€ 0.23 per kilometer) with a minimum of € 14.23 and a maximum of € 193.20 (840 kilometers) per round trip, regardless of the mode of transportation.

HOW LONG DOES THIS RESEARCH TAKE

Period of stay and research

The trial consists of 6 periods during which you will stay in the research facility in Groningen in the first period for 2 days (1 night). For the second till fifth period, you will stay in the research facility for 3 days (2 nights) followed by 4 short visits after the fourth period and 4 short visits after the fifth period. For the sixth period you will stay in the research facility for 5 days (4 nights) followed by 4 short visits. During the study we will call you 13 times to ask some questions in between the periods and short visits. The follow-up visit will take place during the last short visit.

Note: You must be available for all dates to be able to participate in this clinical trial. The current dates of the clinical trial will be published on our website. The location in Groningen is Van Swietenlaan 6.
