The truth about clinical trials

6 myths busted

Yes, you clicked on that ad, nice. Probably because you’re curious. Or maybe you thought: “Clinical trials? Isn’t that dangerous?” Or perhaps you heard someone say participants get treated like rabbits in cages. 🙄

Let’s clear up the nonsense right away. Here’s what really happens.

🐰 “You’re locked up in a cage like a lab animal.”

Nope. You’re not a lab animal. And you’re definitely not locked up.

Clinical trials are done with healthy participants, so you always decide for yourself whether you want to join. At the research center, you’ll have either a shared room or a dorm-style space, depending on the study. And yes, there’s WiFi. You can bring your laptop or Switch to chill, study, or work. Hardly a cage, right?

💥 “It’s super dangerous.”

Understandable that you might think this. But did you know the medications used in research are usually already thoroughly tested in labs and often even on humans?

Research is strictly monitored by ethics committees and government authorities. Your health comes first. Doctors and nurses keep an eye on you 24/7. Not feeling well or have a question? There’s always someone nearby.

🚫 “You’re not allowed to eat or drink anything.”

Not true. Sometimes there are temporary rules, like no alcohol a few days before starting. And yeah, maybe skip that poppy seed bun from the gas station (spoiler: opiates showing up in your drug test = not ideal). But otherwise, you’ll be served proper meals during your stay. And yes, snacking, chilling, or playing a round of Uno? Totally fine.

📵 “You’ll lose all contact with the outside world.”

As if you’re stuck on a deserted island? No way.

You’ll have your phone, laptop, and contact with the outside world. Many participants text, study, or work while staying at the research center. The fun part? You’ll also meet other participants. Often, a relaxed and friendly vibe develops, with game nights and good conversations included.

🌈 “You’ll start hallucinating from the pills.”

Unless you’re secretly joining some kind of festival trial (spoiler: that doesn’t exist), this one’s a total myth.

You’ll always know in advance what you’re getting and what possible side effects may occur. Everything is explained thoroughly. If unexpected side effects do happen, the research is immediately paused or stopped. Your safety is always the top priority. So no, you won’t suddenly start seeing floating gnomes.

💸 “People only do it for the money.”

Of course, you get compensation. And that’s a nice bonus. But what many forget: you’re genuinely contributing to medical progress. Thanks to participants like you, new medicines can be developed that change lives.

So, you get recognition and you make a real difference. Now that’s a win-win, right?

Leave those myths behind.

Check the facts, ask your questions, and see if it’s something for you.
