How does it work?
When you take part in a clinical trial, you receive compensation. The amount depends on the specific trial. In this blog, we explain what the compensation consists of, how and when you will receive it, and what you need to know about taxes and payment.
The amount of compensation does not depend on potential risks or side effects. Instead, other factors determine how much you receive:
Length of the research
For every day you stay at the research center, you receive €190. In addition, you receive €115 for your medical screening.
Special medical procedures
Sometimes additional medical procedures are part of the trial, such as a gastroscopy, an eye exam, or the use of radiolabeled medication. For these procedures, you receive an extra allowance.
Follow-up visits
Do you need to return one or more times after your stay (for example, after 30, 60, 120, or 180 days)? You will also receive extra compensation for these visits.
Travel expenses
You will be reimbursed €0.23 per kilometer. The minimum travel reimbursement is €14.23 and the maximum is €193.20 per return trip.
The Medical Ethics Review Committee (METC) always checks whether the compensation is in proportion to the research.
We pay your compensation (including travel expenses) within 30 days after the final check-up. If you do not end up participating in the trial but you did complete the screening or traveled to the center, you will still receive the related compensation and travel reimbursement within 30 days after the trial starts.
The payment is made to the participant’s IBAN account number. The bank account must therefore be in your own name.
The compensation counts as ‘income from work.’ This means you have to pay taxes on it if you are subject to tax in the Netherlands. That is why we provide you with an annual statement.
For travel expenses, exceptions sometimes apply. It may be that you do not have to pay taxes on these. Always keep your public transport receipts or note down the number of kilometers you traveled.
No, the compensation pertains to income from labor and must be deposited into the participant's own IBAN number.
Yes, the tax authorities regard the compensation as "income from work." Read more about tax on the compensation here
The amount of money you receive for your participation in a clinical trial is determined by the duration of the trial. The longer the trial takes, the higher the compensation. But there are also other factors that determine the amount of the compensation awarded, such as special medical procedures.
We pay the compensation for your participation, including travel expenses, within 30 days of the follow-up screening of the trial. If you have questions about the payment, please contact us.
